Martial arts wisdom for the practice of parenting.

Parenting can feel like stepping onto a mat that keeps changing beneath your feet. What worked yesterday may fail today. The goal is not perfect control. It is learning how to find your center, protect connection, set a clear boundary, repair when you miss, and begin again.

I'm Cj TruHeart. I'm not a parent, and I won't pretend to speak from a parent's lived experience. I'm a world-champion martial artist with more than three decades of practice across wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Northern Shaolin Kung Fu. My role here is specific: to translate wisdom pressure-tested on the mat into practical tools parents and caregivers can adapt in their own homes.

For years, I coached a youth wrestling club and supported kids’ jiu-jitsu programs. That placed me close to the daily work of helping young people meet challenge, correction, frustration, repetition, and responsibility. I saw that confidence, openness to coaching, recovery after mistakes, and the willingness to keep trying were not fixed qualities. They were capacities adults could help strengthen through structure, example, belonging, and the way we responded to struggle. These are observations from the mat…not clinical conclusions, and not a substitute for a parent’s lived knowledge. TruHeart Parenting brings together the clearest lessons from those years in the hope that, collectively and more intentionally, we can help cultivate what children need to flourish as adults.

This is education, not medical, psychological, or clinical treatment. Parents remain the experts on their children, and qualified professionals belong in the corner when a family needs individualized support.

At TruHeart Parenting, the parent is the practitioner. The child is never the project and never the belt being ranked.

The curriculum moves through five seasons:

  • White Belt · Foundations: center, stance, rhythm, and repair

  • Blue Belt · Adaptation: staying balanced when familiar techniques stop working

  • Purple Belt · Humility: curiosity, beginner's mind, and seeing the child anew

  • Brown Belt · Integration: meeting your own wounds without passing them forward

  • Black Belt · Lifelong Practice: service, stewardship, and beginning again

Running through those seasons is PAUSE, a five-step practice for creating space between reaction and response: Pause, Acknowledge, Understand, Seek Solutions, and Evolve Together.

Each flagship issue offers one honest moment, one martial-arts principle, one practical move, and one small practice for the week. Most issues also include a voiceover in my own voice for readers who would rather listen. Music appears occasionally when it can genuinely help a family reset, reflect, or reconnect.

The recommended rhythm is one thoughtful flagship issue every other week…slow enough to protect depth, real life, and the relationships the work is meant to serve.

If this sounds like the kind of practice your family needs, start with the White Belt Foundations and reply with the moment that is hardest in your home right now. Your answer will help shape what we practice next.
